“On the Third Day….”

B”H

“Wine is a mocker, […] he who is deceived thereby is not wise.” Mishlay (Proverbs) 20.1

“And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unawares, and slew all the males.” B’rashith (Genesis) 34.25

“And she said, ‘The Hebrew slave you brought came to mock us.” B’rashith (Genesis) 39.17

40.10 and in the vine were three branches; …. 12 And Joseph said unto him: ‘This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days; 13 within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head, and restore thee unto thine office; and thou shalt give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

42.17 “He put them in prison for three days.” 18 And Joseph said unto them the third day. ‘This do, and live; for I fear God: 19 if ye be upright men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses; 20 and bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die.’ And they did so.”

Hoshea 6.2 “After two days will He revive us, On the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.”

Prepare yourselves for the third day

10 And the L-RD said unto Moses: ‘Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments, 11 and be ready against the third day; for the third day the L-RD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 15 And he said unto the people: ‘Be ready against the third day; come not near a woman.’ 16 And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a horn exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet HaEl-him (The G-D); and they stood at the nether part of the mount. Shmoth 19.10-11, 15-17

42.7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: ‘Whence come ye?’ And they said: ‘From the land of Canaan to buy food.’ (Yoseph says [prophetically] it is the “Land of the Hebrews” – 40.15 “For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.’ “)

42.9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them: ‘Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.’

Yoseph [truly] said [prophetically],

“Ye are spies. To spy out the land ye are come.” 42.9, 12

42.11 We are all one man’s sons; we are upright men, thy servants are no spies.’ “Kulanu B’nay Ish Echad nachnu; Keynim A’nachnu lo hau’yu avaudeecha m’rageliym.”

“They made merry with him (became intoxicated with him).” B’rashith (Genesis) 43.34

“Don’t you know I divine with this cup.” 44.15

Come learn a mizmor (song) – “Kulanu B’nay Ish Echad; Kulanu, Kulanu B’nay Ish Echad, Kulanu, Kulanu B’nay Ish Echad ….”

Could Yoseph know that Moshe would send out “spies” from each tribe to spy out the land of Ca’anan? The answer is: Through prophesy [his dreams]; for when “wine goes in, secrets come out.”

How do we know that Yoseph [prophetically] “saw” the 12 spies Moshe sent out of Kadesh to spy the land of Ca’anan?

The passuk (verse) says, ” ‘You shall carry my bones up out of this place’.” 50.25, Shmoth 13.19

50.21 Now therefore fear ye not; I will sustain you, and your little ones.’ And he comforted them, and spoke kindly unto them.

50.24 And Joseph said unto his brethren: ‘I die; but God will surely [paqod yifqod] remember you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.’

25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying: ‘God will surely remember you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.’

paqod yifqod = to command, muster, take account of [a roll call] – “and the Children of Yisrael went up out of Mitzrayim with a high hand.” as it says, “And the L-RD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel; for the children of Israel went out with a high hand.”

“But there were certain men, who were unclean by the dead body of a man, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day; and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day.” B’midbar (Numbers) 9.6

who were unclean by the dead body of a man: (Yochanan: These were the bones of Yoseph.)

The passuk also says: 50.23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation; the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph’s knees.

And she said unto him: ‘How canst thou say: I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.’ Judges 16.15

28 And the L-RD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam: ‘What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?’ And Balaam said unto the ass: ‘Because thou hast mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.’ B’midbar (Numbers) 22.28-29

32 And the angel of the L-RD said unto him: ‘Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is contrary unto me; 33 and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.’

And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. 1 Kings 3.18

there was no stranger with us in the house – “Thus saith the L-RD G-D: No alien, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into My sanctuary, even any alien that is among the children of Israel.” Ezekiel 44.9

“Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the L-RD, the G-D of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the L-RD.” 2 Kings 20.5

on the third and and on the seventh day – “the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.” B’midbar 19.12

Is it not a Three Days Journey?

I have heard thy prayer: these three times (“And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house–now his windows were open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem–and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his G-D, as he did aforetime.” Daniel 6.10

Three times in the year shall all thy males appear before the L-RD G-D, the G-D of Israel. For I will cast out nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders; neither shall any man covet thy land, when thou goest up to appear before the L-RD thy G-D three times in the year.” Shmoth 34.23-24

Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the L-RD thy G-D in the place which He shall choose; on the feast of unleavened bread, and on the feast of weeks, and on the feast of tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the L-RD empty; every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the L-RD thy G-D which He hath given thee. Devarim 16.16-17)

“And on the Third Day Avraham looked up and perceived the place from afar.” B’rashith 22.4

Shmoth 3.18 “The elders of Israel will listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The L-RD, the G-D of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the L-RD our G-D.’ “

“The G-D of the Hebrews has met with us,” they answered. “Please let us go on a three-day journey into the wilderness to sacrifice to the L-RD our G-D, or He may strike us with plagues or with the sword.” 5.10

“We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the L-RD our G-D, as He shall command us.’ ” 8.27

“It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow; and if aught remain until the third day, it shall be burnt with fire. And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is a vile thing; it shall not be accepted.” VaYiqrah 19.6-7

14 And Avraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh; as it is said to this day: ‘In the mount where the L-RD is seen.’

16 and said: ‘By Myself have I sworn, saith the L-RD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, 17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.’

because thou hast done this thing: Yochanan: Heb. literally, “said this thing” – And Avraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh – Could it really be that naming the Mountain (Moriah) “Adonai-jireh” is what is referred to in this passuk? Perhaps it refers to the sacrifice of the ram in the stead of Yitzchaq (verse 13:

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son.

B’rashith 22.13 “And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, ….”

B’rashith 22.4 “And on the third day Avraham looked up and perceived the place from afar.”

Mah Mitz’anu: Heb. literally – “what do we find?” –

“A threefold cord is hardly broken.” (Koheleth [Ecclesiastes] 4.12)

He said Three Things

HaShem said to Moshe, ‘Take for yourself spices – stacte, onycha, and galbanum – spices and pure frankincense; they are to be of equal weight.’ ” Shmoth 30.34

(Devarim 6.5 “V’Ahavtah Eth Adonay Elohechah b’kal le’vavcha, Oovkol nafshechah, Oovkal Me’Odecha.” “For in these things do I delight,” as it says: “But let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth, and knoweth Me, That I am the L-RD who exercise Mercy, Justice, and Righteousness, in the earth; For in these things I delight, Saith the L-RD.” Yerimiyahu 9.24)

“Wine that makes the heart glad.” Tehillim 104.15

Twice on the Third Day Avraham looked up and was blessed.

One thought on ““On the Third Day….”

  1. But unto you that fear My name Shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings; …. Malachi 4.2; And it shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. 2 Samuel 23.4 And the earth brought forth grass, herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind; and G-D saw that it was good. And there was Evening and there was Morning, the Third Day. B’rashith 1.12, 13
What do we find? and tree bearing fruit … after its kind. Three Years shall it be uncircumcised to you. Va’Yiqrah 19.23; Is man a tree of the field? But the tree you know to be for food …. Devarim 20.19-20
